A procession of motorcycles stretching for six miles made its way
through Rio Rancho and Corrales on Sunday for the 13th annual Rio Rancho Toy
Run.
Bikes ranging from Harley-Davidson Sportsters to Road Kings and everything
in between were part of the toy run that collected new toys and nonperishable
food items for needy families.
"We had them coming in from Las Vegas, New Mexico, Farmington, coming down
from the East Mountains, Los Lunas, Belen and I think some were even from Santa
Fe," said Dawn Raia Troup, coordinator of the Rio Rancho toy run committee.
The toy run, which is held the Sunday before Thanksgiving, began Sunday
morning at Crossroads Cycles at 300 Frontage Road in Rio Rancho. Forming a
column, the riders followed a 25-mile route along Northern, Unser, U.S. 550,
N.M. 528, Corrales Road, Loma Larga and Meadowlark Lane. The ride ended at the
Italian American Club on Stephanie Road in Rio Rancho, Raia Troup said.
Two live bands and food awaited participants at the Italian American Club.
"We asked them (riders) for donations of one new toy and two non-perishable
food items per person," she said.
About 4,000 toys were collected Sunday and will be distributed to a variety
of organizations that help needy children.
Stuffed animals will be given to the Rio Rancho Department of Public Safety,
Corrales Police Department, Bernalillo Police Department and the Sandoval County
Sheriff's Department for distribution to needy children, Raia Troup said.
Food items collected were distributed to St. Felix Pantry, a food bank that
serves needy families in Sandoval County, Raia Troup said.
Toys are also distributed at a holiday party organized by the Rio Rancho toy
run committee. The event, featuring Santa Claus, is thrown for needy children up
to 18 years old.
Children are selected to be a part of the event through school counselors
and social workers.
They usually receive three toys and two stuffed animals at the holiday
party, Raia Troup said.
The Rio Rancho toy run committee is an offshoot of the American Brotherhood
Aimed Toward Education (ABAIT), Raia Troup said.
ABAIT is a group that encourages motorcycle riding education and promotes
public awareness about motorcycle riding, she said.
